University of Regina says student has TB

The University of Regina is alerting students and employees after a student was found to have active tuberculosis.

In an email, university's acting vice-president, Nelson Wagner, said the unnamed person is being treated.

The university is working with the tuberculosis control centre in Saskatchewan to provide information to the person's friends, as well as others who have had close personal contact, Wagner said.

Those people will be screened for the disease.

On Thursday and Friday, health officials will visit classes the individual had attended to provide information and assess their level of risk, he said.

The university is advising anyone who's concerned about being exposed to call TB Control Saskatchewan at 933-6482 or 1-866-780-6482.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that usually attacks the lungs. It's treated with antibiotics.
