Envoy blasts Kenya for bureaucracy over Global Funds

While stigma and discrimination may still be killing Kenyans by preventing them from accessing treatment, bureaucratic challenges and lack of strong accountability mechanisms may equally be contributing to unnecessary deaths.

Posted by Henry Neondo (henry)
The preliminary results from an innovative HIV counseling and testing program supported by the Kenyan Ministry of Health show that the stigma of HIV testing can be overcome when it is directly addressed by having an entire community participate.

Stigma kills

Nelly, who became a widower five days later after their marriage relates her husband's death as follows: "This is a sad story to me and I always burst in tears every time I think about what happened. Before we got married my boyfriend revealed his status to me, he was HIV positive. That was not an issue to me. We agree to get married, and we did. It was unfortunate that traditionally a bride has to go back to her parents few days after their marriage and come back after two or three days. Before I went back to my parents' homestead I observed that my mother-in-law did not want my husband to come closer to her or to step in her kitchen for food. This affected my husband badly. Two days later when I came back from my parents' homestead I found my husband depressed. I took him to hospital, unfortunately he was severely traumatised. He only stayed one day in hospital and he passed away. This was bad, " Nelly concluded.

Malawi struggles to fight HIV stigma
Posted by Henry Neondo (henry)
Malawi is said to be struggling to fight the stigma against HIV/AIDS. The Malawi government has managed to effectively respond to HIV/AIDS beyond what activists call average levels, but the country has failed to address human rights issues surrounding the pandemic in that country. While the country has sound HIV and AIDS policies and has demonstrated a strong sense of leadership and understanding of the pandemic, the general public has little understanding of HIV/AIDS matters and this has resulted into the violation of rights of those that are infected. The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) one of the several Malawian civil society orgnisations that are implementing HIV/AIDS human rights programes has uncovered that while there is more knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues in the country, many people are still not respecting the dignity of persons living with HIV.

Southern Africa: Is the pen mightier than the virus?

Isn't it time that journalists started taking HIV/AIDS beyond the newsroom and into the bedroom? In many newsrooms the highly politicised topic of HIV/AIDS remains just that - political. Journalists aren't immune to HIV/AIDS; they just don't talk about it.

Legislatures call for more funding, less stigma and discrimination in the fight against AIDS

Stigma, discrimination holding back HIV fight

The recent slaying of a woman in western Uganda by her husband after he tested positive for HIV has highlighted the need for the government to tackle HIV-related human rights abuses. The man is reported to have hacked his wife to death in August, after accusing her of infecting him with the virus. Following the incident, HIV-positive protesters marched through the capital, Kampala, calling on the government to provide greater protection to people living with HIV. At least three similar incidents have been reported around the country in the past year alone.

Stigma Fails T.B Testing and Treatment in Uganda
Posted by Linda Lilian (owamazima)
Most people cannot stand up to the stigma about them. No one wants to be pointed out as a T.B patient and then related to an AIDS patient. The worst option which a number of Ugandans undertake involves keeping away from T.B and HIV/AIDS tests as well as treatment.

Cannot Stand the Stigma - Cannot Get T.B Treatment
Posted by Linda Lilian (owamazima)
There is a thin line between taking the brave step to take a test for Tuberculosis, start on the treatment and then complete it while taking the chance of being alienated and pointed out in society. Stigma is a wild guess that keeps it victims guessing over what is to happen next rather than take the responsible and ethical choice of testing and geting on treatment before their health is derailed.

Can’t stand the stigma? Can’t get TB treatment
Posted by Linda Lilian (owamazima)
Stigma against people with TB in Uganda is so strong it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a bus full of people fleeing the vehicle or making assumptions about HIV co-infection after finding out another passenger had the disease. According to Roger Mugisha, a Clinial Officer working in Bushenyi, the fact that 70% of people diagnosed with TB are found to be HIV positive has contributed to the levels of stigma. “If you have TB and do not test HIV positive, it is a great relief,” Mugisha said.
